Reading: James 3:1-18
Verse: “Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath.”
--James 1:19

There is no question that we ought to speak up and speak out for the Lord. James is not saying that we should be slow to speak for the Lord, but rather that we should slow down and think before we speak. It is obvious that wise King Solomon agreed with the Apostle James.

Pr. 10:19, “In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that refraineth his lips is wise.”

Pr. 13:3, “He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction.”

Pr. 15:2, “The tongue of the wise useth knowledge aright: but the mouth of fools poureth out foolishness.”

Pr. 17:27, “He that hath knowledge spareth his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit.”

Pr. 18:13, “He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him.”

Pr. 18:21, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.”

Pr. 21:23, “Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles.”

There is great wisdom in Solomon’s simple advice. A wise man “studieth” or meditates on what he has heard before he answers. That truth is that the more we say, the more likely we are to say something we’ll wish we had not said. Think of it this way, “Little talk, little trouble; Little thought, double trouble!” I don’t know about you, but the older I get, the quieter I get. I think that’s because I’m finally beginning to learn “Wise men weigh their thoughts and wait.”

Thought for Today: “The chance of saying something sinful increases every time we open our mouth, and decreases every time we open our Bible.” M.D.H. Sr.
