Reading: Philippians 1:27-30
Verse: “Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ,” --Philippians 1:27
Verse: “Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ,” --Philippians 1:27
The word Paul uses for conversation in Phil. 1:27, simply means “lifestyle.” Though he uses the word “conversation,” Paul is emphasizing how we walk, not how we talk! He wants the Philippians to know that their lifestyle, their attitude, and their testimony should not change as the circumstances of life change. We must live what we have learned. We must live by faith and not by sight. As someone once said, “Circumstances do not determine the character of a man. They only reveal a man’s character.”
There is nothing the enemy is doing, or can do, that should terrify the Christian. We need to “stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together” (1:27). The Greek word translated stand fast, means to remain firm and hold one’s ground. If we do what we are called to do and if other believers do what they are called to do, nothing the enemy can do will discourage or terrify us (1:28). The Devil is always pleased when he sees internal divisions in a church or ministry. “Divide and conquer” is his motto and, too often, he has his way. It is only as believers stand together in unity that they can overcome the wicked one. As Paul told the Ephesians, we should be “Endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace,” (Eph. 4:3).
Can you imagine how encouraging it must have been for the Philippians to hear Paul say, “In nothing be terrified by your adversaries?” Here he was in prison, facing a possible death sentence, and yet all the while encouraging them to let nothing frighten them! We too should take courage, hold our ground, and learn to work together in harmony with fellow believers. Only then can we truly accomplish great things for the Lord.
Thought for Today: “The man who can not live in harmony with the saints of God is most likely not living in harmony with the Spirit of God.” M.D.H. Sr.
